It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that Heo Yeoreum is the living embodiment of sunshine. Much like her name, summer, she is ceaselessly bright, always seen donning a radiant smile on her face. With her cheerful and easygoing temperament, it seems to be in her nature to befriend every single person she comes across. She is the perfect example of what one might call a social butterfly—knowing everyone in the block and striking up conversations with strangers come naturally to her. She carries herself in a happy-go-lucky and laid-back manner, seemingly resistant to others’ negative attitude towards her as she never lets it get into her (either she is highly tolerant, or she’s just extremely positive, or both). Some might regard her as annoying due to how boisterous she tends to get, but she’s not one to be hated, because if anything, Yeoreum is sincere. She treats others with genuine kindness and joy, making it easy for most people to feel comfortable with her. Being a sweetheart with so much love to give, she’s also not shy to openly express her love and affection towards her loved ones.Aside from that, Yeoreum is honest. Maybe even to a fault. She is straightforward in voicing out what she’s feeling and won’t hesitate to point out things that aren’t quite to her liking. While she has the attention span of a goldfish and can be a tad bit oblivious at times, she is not dimwitted by any means. She is a fast learner, quick to pick up on things especially if shown the ropes. She is also incredibly loyal and caring to the point of selflessness. More often than not, she’d prioritize others’ needs above hers.Despite having the blood of a fire dog beast in her veins, Yeoreum looks just like any other human in most circumstances. She is of average build, albeit slightly taller compared to the average Korean woman. Her fair complexion contrasts nicely with her bright golden eyes; round face framed with shoulder-length blonde strands that are often thrown into a high ponytail that messily sticks out in all angles. Most of the times, she can be seen wearing orange-red makeup around her eyes, donning casual clothes. Meanwhile, Yeoreum’s normal dog form is like a fawn-colored Korean Jindo dog, with upright ears and a sickle-shaped tail. Her beast form is pretty much the same, except for the fact that she’s much bigger, almost the size of a wolf, and the tip of her tail and legs are ablaze. However, Yeoreum rarely transforms into her beast form unless needed.

things to
ㅤkeep in mind

  • Although she can eat vegetables just fine, she doesn’t particularly like the taste and often refuses to eat them. Naturally, meat is her favorite food.

  • Perhaps due to her being a half-dog herself, she seems to have an innate ability to understand dogs. If she has to describe it, she’d say that it’s something similar to telepathy, more or less.

  • Owns a dog daycare at Mapo-gu, Seoul, South Korea. Aside from this, Yeoreum also offers dog training service at home for her clients.

  • Extremely athletic, also has ridiculously fast reflexes.

  • Has a scar on her upper back. It was something that she got years ago, when she was attacked by an evil dokkaebi as a child.

  • Loathes winter. When winter comes, she tends to hole up in her room, bundled in thick blankets with the heater blasted, absolutely refusing to go out.

  • Has a small flower tattoo on her left chest.

  • The life span of a beast is different and longer than that of a human. This, too, applies to Yeoreum, although her life span isn’t as long as pure blood beasts. She is still fairly young for a beast, but in human age...

  • Has picked up a lot of skills throughout her life. Some are genuinely useful (like speaking foreign languages and martial arts), some are useless but amusing nonetheless (like solving a Rubik’s cube in seconds and laughing with a straight face).

the beast’s
ㅤㅤabilities

TRANSFORMATION:

As a half-beast, more specifically a dog beast, Yeoreum is able to transform at will. She can transform into a fire dog beast, or into a normal Jindo dog. However, there are some conditions regarding the transformation process itself that must be kept in mind, such as:

  1. Transformation is affected by emotions. Should there be a fluctuation of emotions inside of Yeoreum’s heart, then she might turn into her dog or beast form, be it partially (only some parts, like ears and/or tail) or fully (whole appearance).

  2. To turn back into a human, focus and a calm mind are needed.

  3. Will switch into her beast form, be it fully or partially, if she’s too weak and/or running out of energy. To gain the ability to turn back into a human, she needs proper rest and food.

  4. Similar to werewolves transforming when the full moon appears, when a solar eclipse is occurring, she’ll turn into her beast form until the eclipse ends, regardless if she wants it or not. This time is when she is the weakest.

FIRE MAGIC:

Yeoreum possesses the ability to perform fire magic or pyrokinesis, which includes resistance or immunity to fire; summoning fire; and augmenting existing flames. This ability of hers works the best if she is in her beast form.

ENHANCED SENSES:

Yeoreum’s five senses are generally more enhanced than that of a normal human. However, her sense of hearing and smell are especially strong, much like a dog. The heightened sense of hearing that she possesses allows her to hear sounds from a notable distance and hear noises of a higher frequency, as well as discerning layers of overlapping sounds, even pinpointing the location of the sound. Her sense of smell is also more sensitive, as she is able to discern her surroundings through scent and detects things from the way they smell.

SUPERHUMAN STRENGTH:

Being a half-beast, Yeoreum is blessed with superhuman strength. Not only that she possesses more brute power than normal humans, she also has better reflexes, making her faster and more agile. Besides that, she has higher durability, which allows her to withstand blows that might severely injure or even kill mortals. As a dog beast, she also has extremely strong jaws, causing her bite to be quite deadly. Still, she’s not as strong as other pure blood beasts.

limits to the
ㅤbeast’s power

  1. Vulnerable to intense cold and extremely hot weather.

  2. Control, discipline, and restraint are extremely important when it comes to her abilities. Unconscious, emotion-influenced, impulsive, or reckless use of her power can lead to a catastrophe (or more).

  3. Using too much of her fire magic drains her energy. If she pushes herself past her limits, she’d feel feverish, as if she’s burning inside out.

  4. She would get extremely weak during a solar eclipse.

  5. Due to her heightened senses, she can get overwhelmed from sensory overload.

forlorn tale of loss and sacrifices.

Line

Since many, many years ago, beast and spirit folks reside in their own realm, hidden deep within the mountains of Korea, away from the touch of mortals. Imoogi, gumiho, dokkaebi, dog beasts, and all other mythical creatures live together in peace; protecting each other from the very creature that they despise: humans. After all, nothing threatens their existence more than the humans who sought after their lives—the beast hunters.Amongst all the creatures, there lived a fire dog beast named Chan. Chan, despite the hatred and fear that most beast and spirit folks hold towards humans, sneaked into the human realm; driven by his curiosity and intrigue towards humans and their obviously different way of living.Unfortunately, demise awaited him that particular night. He was attacked by a beast hunter along the way, only managing to escape the goddamned hunter by a hair’s breadth. However, wounds far too severe and energy almost completely drained, Chan failed to muster the strength to go back to his realm. And so the only thing that he could do was to lay there in the middle of the dark forest, helpless, waiting for death to drag him down. But death never came.Instead, came an unfamiliar woman—a breathtakingly beautiful lady whose face was filled with nothing but concern. Concern for him, a dangerous dog beast. It was odd. She was supposed to be afraid of him. She was supposed to run and leave him there to die. After all, beasts are nothing but extreme danger in the eyes of humans.Much to his disbelief, the lady saved him. With her small and delicate hands, she brought the dying beast to her house, a small hut on the edge of the forest, and treated his wounds. Heo Garim, he learned, was a human with an angelic heart. Despite her own harsh situation, with her being a poor orphan who was working hard to learn medicine, Garim nursed Chan to health. It took a lot of time, patience, and a massive amount of energy, but Chan had never once seen Garim without a smile on her face. She was like the sun, if not even brighter. And so, he fell in love.

A beast and a human—it was a tragic story with no happy ending in sight. Chan feared for his life, hers, and the sacrifices they had to make if they wanted to fight for their love. Soon enough, his fear was proven right. Once he stepped back into his realm, he was greeted with hostility from the other creatures. From his own kind.Traitor, they said. It was unforgivable to be in contact with humans, their supposedly arch nemesis, let alone fall in love with them. Chan was quick to be banished from the beast and spirit realm—abandoned by his own kind. Abandoned by his family, his everything. But Garim, sweet, sweet Garim, welcomed him with open arms. They might be a beast and a human, but truly, they were merely two lonely souls who found solace in nowhere but each other. As time went by, their love only grew bigger, bigger, and bigger, until it manifested itself in the form of a child. For the first time in forever, Chan brimmed with happiness. Even with his limited knowledge about human pregnancy, or even humans in general, he still tried his best to help and assist his beloved woman. However, as if the world and deities above had cursed him, his happiness didn’t last long.Garim’s body wasn’t strong enough to bear the child of a beast.Moments after she gave birth to their one and only daughter, a beautiful baby girl, Heo Garim passed away. She passed with a smile, with I love you being the last words she had spoken, but it wrecked Chan just the same. He was broken, almost beyond repair, but the existence of his daughter helped him live. Her daughter, given the name Heo Yeoreum for being born in the summer and having a smile as bright as the summer sun, became the only light of his bleak life. Slowly but surely, Yeoreum gave him strength to live, to love, to be a proper father.Chan, even with all of his flaws and shortcomings, did his best for his dearest daughter. He was hesitant to let his daughter, a half-human, set foot into a realm filled with creatures who loathe humans, so he decided to stay in the Human Realm. All the while guiding Yeoreum on how to blend into human society, Chan also taught her everything about her beastly origins, from what they are to what they are capable of.After all, it is something that she needs not forget.Despite everything,
Heo Yeoreum is still a beast.

Heo Yeoreum doesn’t know who she is.Ah, no, that wouldn’t be correct. Perhaps, saying that she doesn’t know what she is would be more accurate. After all, she looks and acts like a human, but not quite. She has the blood of a beast running in her veins, but not entirely. She is both a human and a beast, a mixture of everything in between, yet she gets treated like neither. Some other beasts looked at her with contempt; disgust written all over their features. They called her all sorts of nicknames: a disgrace, dirty half-blood, the descendant of a traitor. As if her existence is a sin, as if she should have never been born. Throughout her life, her father has never let her set foot in the beast and spirit realm, fearing for her life. When she was young, she almost died in the hands of a dokkaebi, of what is supposed to be her own kind. The scar, rough and ugly, remains even after years; a cruel reminder of how she is not accepted. Most humans are afraid of her. Afraid of what she is capable of, of what she is beneath her friendly smile and human-looking face. Long ago, they despised her enough to send hunters after her, nothing but her death in their minds. The more she spends her life living among them, the more she realizes that she sticks out like a sore thumb. She can do things that normal humans can’t do, she can’t do things that normal humans can do, she is different.

she is lost, alone amidst all the noise.

Heo Yeoreum continues to live—day after day, month after month, year after year. Even when a century has passed, even when the humans that she knew when she was young had long died, she continues to live. Not knowing what she is, not sure what she has to do.The world has changed, beasts have become nothing but a mere myth to humans, but Yeoreum stays the same. No matter how many places she’s been to, how many things she’s dabbled in, and how many people she’s met, she’s still the same old Heo Yeoreum. The same old Heo Yeoreum that feels like she doesn’t belong anywhere, like she shouldn’t be here, but she stays anyway. The same old Heo Yeoreum who is clueless, not knowing who or what she is, but acts like she’s certain. The same old Heo Yeoreum who acts strong, grounded, but really—what is she if not lost?
